I feel like this post is a couple of weeks late now but I’ve kind of been putting it off as I know my blogging goals at the beginning of last year are so far off what I actually did that it’s not the most positive thing to look back on for last year. I’ve been trying to work on things and plan ahead and needed a break from blogging, partly planned at the beginning but then I got ill so less planned but definitely needed.
I tend to make goals posts for my blog and update and change them as I go throughout the year as I see goals as a flexible thing, something that you can change as the circumstances change, and check things off as you go along and add new ones. I tended to find that whenever I set new years resolutions they seem to fail pretty early but goals with definite updates throughout the year work better for me.
I did originally plan to do an update every three months but my last one was in March so you can see how well that went! I can’t believe how quickly 2018 has gone, so much seems to have happened but in so little time. Having got a notification saying I’ve just had my 4 year anniversary I thought I’d look back at the goals I set way back in January and see how I’m doing.
I tend to see goals as something to aim for, but still keep them flexible. I’ve found that if I’m too rigid with these things it’s easy to get discouraged and give up. Things change, life gets in the way, making realistic goals helps me to stick to them and I love that feeling when you achieve something. It’s like that feeling of crossing off things on a list. I think I just like lists in general.
For me goals are something to aim for but I tend to find that keeping them flexible is the best. Things in life change all the time so why not goals too? Sometimes it’s good to move the goalposts and give yourself a bit of extra time, as long as it’s not something that would have a negative impact on yourself or others, and the opposite can help too. I often find I work best to a deadline which has meant late nights finishing coursework but making little goals and deadlines in life for myself seems to have a similar effect.
I don’t tend to do New Years resolutions, there’s only so many times I can put learn to drive or get healthier before it feels a bit redundant really, but I do love setting goals. I don’t just do this at the beginning of the year, for me goals are something that I keep updating and altering. If something isn’t achievable then I alter it a bit so it is, or also if something is too easy I might up the goal a bit and see if I can achieve that.
Some of these goals are pretty short term and they’re all pretty all over the place. I guess I find it easiest to write goals when I have a mix of vague and long term and precise or short term goals. The combination means I have different things to focus on and some sort of become passive goals or background noise that just happen when I get into the habit of doing them.
For ages I would make new year’s resolutions but there are only so many times you can have learn to drive on there but kit be able to achieve it purely because of health reasons before it gets a bit demoralising.
Instead I have decided to make goals, I did his last year and I failed most due to a mix of health, mediation side effects or other family member’s health issues that were more important to think about but since having ME I have definitely learnt that goals should be flexible as being to rigid with them leads to disappointment and it’s just not how chronic illnesses work, in my experience anyway. I’ve done a couple of posts in the past about planning and how I don’t tend to plan too far into the future because ME kind of ruins a lot of those plans but I do set goals for myself, either things that I can do daily or longer term goals with deadlines. I try to make these achievable, or at least quite a few of them, because I’ve tried to make harder goals in the past that were less achievable and it just makes me feel even more down about what I can’t manage to do because of my chronic illness.
Basically I find that being flexible with goals is the main thing, at least for me, I review my goals pretty often and change them though I realised I haven’t actually looked at the goals I set in August in this post. So I thought, with it being the beginning of a new year and a pretty good time to set new goals, it was worth doing that and looking whether I actually managed to do the ones I set. I think I ended up failing on most of them but I did have quite a few health problems so I’m not too down on it, a new start and everything, so I’m probably keeping a few of them and trying more to achieve them.
